WORKSHOPS

SINGLISH AND SING LIT: WRITING POETRY WITH SINGLISH
For:
secondary, junior college; 5–25 pax
Availability: 2-3 hours per session; single session

Description: Singlish is everywhere in Singapore life, but how often do students get to take it seriously as a literary material? Many assume that poetry demands a kind of formal, elevated language far removed from how they actually speak. This workshop turns that assumption on its head.

In this single-session workshop, poet Cheng Him will guide students through what makes Singlish distinctively Singlish, how local poets have brought it onto the page and how students themselves can write with and in it. By the end of the session, students will leave with a clearer understanding of Singlish as a literary resource and an original poem of their own.

Learning Outcomes: 1) Identify and analyse the linguistic features of Singlish. 2) Examine representations of Singlish in local literary texts and evaluate how authors use Singlish to create meaning, voice and cultural identity. 3) Write a poem that incorporates or engages with Singlish.
