ABOUT

JY Yang is the author of the Tensorate series of novellas from Tor.com Publishing, which includes The Red Threads of Fortune, The Black Tides of Heaven, and two additional titles slated for 2018. Their short fiction has been published in multiple award-winning venues, and they currently edit fiction for Epigram Books.

WORKSHOPS

IMAGINED REALITIES
For: 
upper sec, junior college; 8-20 pax
Availability: 2 / 3 hours per session; single session
Description: How do you create a fantastical world that is both believable and compelling? And what kind of stories would you tell in that world? In this workshop, students will study the basics of world-building, tapping into character, geography and sociology. During the course of the workshop, students will get a chance to write a piece of flash fiction (500-1000w) and critique each others' work.
Learning Outcomes: understand the relationship between story and setting; hands-on experience in writing a short piece of speculative fiction.

THE PRACTICAL GUIDE TO GETTING PUBLISHED
For: 
all students; min. 10 pax
Availability: 1/hour per session; single session
Description: How does one become a published author? How do you sell a short story, how do you find an agent, how do you make a book deal? Drawing on their experience in being published both locally and internationally, SFF author JY Yang gives the scoop on short fiction markets, creative writing workshops, and how to get started as a writer for fun and for profit.
Learning Outcomes: learn the tricks of the trade in the literary marketplace; learn how to pitch, market, and secure deals.
