tanpa kulit
tiadalah kacang
dapat menumbuh
terpendam dalam
tanah.

seperti budi
yang terpendam
menumbuhkan buah
yang berkulit.

kacang janganlah
melupakan kulit
dan tanah tempat
tumbuh dan kembali.

kerana terima kasih
bukanlah patah kata
manis mulut semata
tetapi ucap seluruh raga.

there is no bean
that can grow
hidden within
the earth.

just like virtue
that is hidden
produces fruit
with skin.

bean, don’t
forget the shell
and the earth where
you grew from and will return to.

because thank you
is not just a few syllables
conveying sweetness from the mouth
but the voice of the whole body.

Muhammad Khairool Haque is a writer and educator passionate about the Malay language. He is the author of the poetry collections Iftitah and Anak Waktu Belajar Diam. His writing has earned him the Golden Point Award in both poetry and short stories, as well as the Anugerah Persuratan (Literary Award) for his poetry compilation. He has also been recognised with the Anugerah Harapan (Promising Award) for his contributions to literature as a youth. Beyond writing and teaching, he is currently pursuing graduate studies at the National Institute of Education.

Poems on the MRT is an initiative by the National Arts Council, in partnership with SMRT and Stellar Ace. Produced by Sing Lit Station, a local literary non-profit organisation, this collaboration displays excerpts of Singapore poetry throughout SMRT’s train network, integrating local literature into the daily experience of commuters. Look out for poems in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil in trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle Lines, as well as videos created by local artists and featuring local poets in stations and on trains.
