Memory of Railway Tracks by Quek Yong Siu

Memory of Railway Tracks
Written by Quek Yong Siu
Translated by Shelly Bryant

along the track of time
my longing like the endless
sky like the sun and moon
rising and setting
like the undying grass
by the wooden sleepers
looking back the first half of our lives
lies within this landscape growing
more distant more distinct

back then along this long
green corridor we made our vows
this life’s yearnings and hopes
like the excited rumble of the train approaching from afar
the earth’s heartbeat like our own
awkward with words hearts
engaged in a fervent internal struggle

the years in the roaring sound
are crushed into a wisp
smoke drifting away
now thick now thin
following the direction of love

our love
a pair of parallel
tracks
never abandoning never parting
stretching towards distant dreams
like the ever changing scenery
outside the window peaks valleys
like the boundless joy and sorrow within
no matter how much hardship we’ve passed through
different moods one heart
like this
following each other forever
