இருப்பின் மேன்மை

ஒரு மலரைப் போலக் கிடக்கிறது
நதியின் வழியில் சிறுமணற்பரப்பு
உரசிச் செல்லும் நதியால்
எப்பொழுதும் அரிக்கப்படுகின்றன
அதன் இதழ்கள்.
மலர்ந்திருக்கிறதா உதிர்ந்திருக்கிறதா
தெரியவில்லை
அலைகளால்
நனைந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறது
அது போதும்.

Like a flower it lies -
a small sandy stretch
in the river's path.
Its petals bruised and crushed
By the flowing river
Has it bloomed,
or wilted?
It is unclear.

But it continues 
to be soaked by the waves.  
That is enough.

Mathikumar Thayumanavan is a Singapore Literature Prize-winning poet. Hailing from Pattamangalam, India, Mathikumar completed his bachelor’s degree in production engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Trichy. He currently works as an IT manager in a private company. With an interest in reading and discussing poetry, Mathikumar has had his poems published in various online and print magazines, including Manal veedu in India and Tamil Murasu in Singapore. A recipient of several accolades, including a prize at the Singapore Poetry Festival (2015) and the National Arts Council's Golden Point Award (2015, 2021), Mathikumar won the Singapore Literature Prize in 2024 for his poetry collection Yamakkodangi.

மதிக்குமார் தாயுமானவன் சிங்கப்பூர் இலக்கியப் பரிசு பெற்ற கவிஞர். மதிக்குமார் இந்தியாவின் பட்டமங்கலத்தைப் பூர்வீகமாகக் கொண்டவர். திருச்சி தேசியத் தொழில்நுட்பக் கழகத்தில் உற்பத்தித் தொழில்நுட்ப இளநிலை பட்டப்படிப்பை 2004-இல் முடித்தபின், இந்தியாவில் தனியார் துறையில் நான்காண்டு பணியாற்றினார். பிறகு 2008-இல் சிங்கப்பூருக்குக் குடிபெயர்ந்தார். ஒரு தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் மென்பொருள் துறையில் மேலாளராகப் பணிபுரிகிறார். கவிதை வாசிப்பிலும் உரையாடலிலும் ஆர்வமுள்ள மதிக்குமாரின் கவிதைகள், இந்தியாவின் மணல்வீடு, சிங்கப்பூரின் தமிழ் முரசு உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு இணைய, அச்சு இதழ்களில் வெளியாகியுள்ளன. அவர் யாமக்கோடங்கி என்னும் தமது முதல் கவிதைத் தொகுப்பை 2023-இல் வெளியிட்டார். கவிமாலை அமைப்பின் உறுப்பினராகவும் அதன் செயலவையிலும் 2010-களிலிருந்து செயல்படுகிறார். சிங்கப்பூர்க் கவிதை விழாப் பரிசு (2015), தேசியக் கலை மன்றத்தின் தங்க முனை விருது (2015, 2021) உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு அங்கீகாரங்களைப் பெற்ற மதிக்குமார், யாமக்கோடங்கி கவிதைத் தொகுப்புக்காக சிங்கப்பூர் இலக்கியப் பரிசை 2024-இல் பெற்றார்.

Poems on the MRT is an initiative by the National Arts Council, in partnership with SMRT and Stellar Ace. Produced by Sing Lit Station, a local literary non-profit organisation, this collaboration displays excerpts of Singapore poetry throughout SMRT’s train network, integrating local literature into the daily experience of commuters. Look out for poems in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil in trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle Lines, as well as videos created by local artists and featuring local poets in stations and on trains.
