真相 之一 / The Truth - Part 1 by Chua Chim Kang

The Truth - Part 1
Written by Chua Chim Kang
Translated by Joshua Ip

We all believe in the truth and in some indubitable justice; if it can be allowed, let us also believe in a little more beauty in this short, short life.

i
a meteor is the matchstick of the sun
you lift your head -- in that coincidence,
you find its trick to lighting up the moon

ii
the moon is just another mirror
veering through void longer than any meteor
eastward pursuing He who chased the sun

iii
a river is the fuel of the sun
at even-evening
rushing to top up the afterglow
every day rushing, every day
late by one night

iv
if the sky could age
it would not be for love
but for He who made her
ahead of time

Chua Chim Kang, born in 1965, attended Nan Chiau Primary School, River Valley High School, Hwa Chong Junior College, National Taiwan University, and the National Institute of Education. He previously worked as a teacher; he is a media professional and enjoys writing.

Poems on the MRT is an initiative by the National Arts Council, in partnership with SMRT and Stellar Ace. Produced by Sing Lit Station, a local literary non-profit organisation, this collaboration displays excerpts of Singapore poetry throughout SMRT’s train network, integrating local literature into the daily experience of commuters. Look out for poems in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil in trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle Lines, as well as videos created by local artists and featuring local poets in stations and on trains. The Chinese, Malay, and Tamil poems are available in both the original languages and English. To enjoy the full poems, commuters may read them on go.gov.sg/potm.
