They say not to judge a book by its cover, but for designers Alison Schooling and Sarah Tang of Sarah and Schooling–they are acutely aware of first impressions from the book shelve. If you've picked up a recent work of literature written by a Singaporean and published by a Singapore-based press, you have a very good chance of picking up a book designed by them. They'll be sharing how designing literary books require four different viewpoints (the author, publisher, designer and you, the reader).
An ardent supporter of Singapore’s literary scene, Sarah and Schooling is actively involved in designing books and publications across multiple genres. Since their founding in 2013, they have been responsible for nearly a hundred original literary titles over the past three years, spanning the genres of poetry, prose, plays, graphic novels and aesthetic collections. Their capabilities and experience stretch beyond publications, reaching other creative disciplines such as visual identity and branding, art directing, editorial design, web design, copywriting, and conducting workshops.
