Rhyme, scheme, regular metre, the volta of the sonnet, anagrams: Are they still relevant today when one of the most popular poems on Instagram is "Love made / her wild" (Thom Young)?
But hold on! We're not hating on the line break, or denying its usefulness as a handy poetic tool. There is, however, a prevailing sense of poetry as "lines chopped up", and with the dismissal of these other poetic tools, we mourn the lost joy of finding harmony between form and content, the rhythmic flow of words the ear demands to hear.
At this AfterWords, the Ethos Books team will be sharing their favourite UnFree poems from the book, UnFree Verse, the first ever anthology of Singapore poems in formal verse. And don’t just let us do the talking – we want to know your favourite verses in form!
