விண் மீன்கள்
பாத்தேறல் இளமாறன்

மினுக்கல் மினுக்கல் வானில் பார்
விந்தை அவற்றைச் செய்தார் யார்?
உனக்கும் எனக்கும் எட்டி டாமல்
உயர்ந்த தொலைவில் வைத்தார் யார்?
கணக்கில் கோடி வானில் மின்னும்
கம்மல் தானோ விண்மீன்கள்?
மணக்கும் முல்லைப் பூவைப் போல
இரவில் தெரியும் பாருங்கள்!

Stars, stars shining bright
up in the sky.
Who created such wonderous sight?

Who placed them up so high,
out of reach
for you and me?

Are they shiny earrings -
Those sparkling stars
that twinkle in millions
across the sky?

Just take a look!
Like fragrant jasmine flowers
they appear -
Oh, so clearly at night!

The late Mr Paatheral Illamaran arrived in Singapore when he was 10 years old. He started writing at the age of 18. His first poem was published in the then Tamil Malar in 1964. Mr Paatheral has written more than 1500 poems and songs, which have been published in local Tamil newspapers, radio, TV, 2 Kollywood movies etc. His works include 9 books and 4 audio CDs. Little known information about Mr Paatheral is that he had coined the Tamil word for ice-cream’ - ‘பனிக்கூழ்’ which has been adapted worldwide. He has been conferred many accolades by the local and Malaysian Tamil literary circles. An adherent of pure Tamil words, he stood by his principles in all his literary works.

மறைந்த கவிஞர் பாத்தேறல் இளமாறன் அவர்கள், சிங்கப்பூரைத் தமது பத்தாம் அகவையில் வந்தடைந்தார். அவரின் பதினெட்டாம் வயதிலிருந்து கவிதைகள் எழுதத் தொடங்கினார். முதல் படைப்பு, 1964ல் , அன்றைய தமிழ் மலர் நாளிதழில் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. 1500-ம் மேற்பட்ட கவிதைகளும் இசைப்பாடல்களும் இயற்றியுள்ளார். நாளிதழ்கள், வானொலி, தொலைக்காட்சி, இரு திரைப்படங்கள் போன்றவற்றில், அவரின் படைப்புகள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன.  9 நூல்கள் மற்றும் 4 இசை வட்டுகளை வெளியீடு செய்துள்ளார். ‘Ice-cream’ என்ற ஆங்கிலச் சொல்லை ‘பனிக்கூழ்’ என்று தமிழாக்கம் செய்தவரே, திரு பாத்தேறல் ஆவார். சிங்கை, மலேசியாவின் தமிழ் அமைப்புகள் அவருக்கு பல்வேறு விருதுகள் வழங்கி சிறப்புச் செய்துள்ளன. தனித்தமிழ் பற்றாளரான கவிஞர் பாத்தேறல் இளமாறன் அவர்கள், தம் கொள்கையில் என்றுமே வழுவாது இருந்தவர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Poems on the MRT is an initiative by the National Arts Council, in partnership with SMRT and Stellar Ace. Produced by Sing Lit Station, a local literary non-profit organisation, this collaboration displays excerpts of Singapore poetry throughout SMRT’s train network, integrating local literature into the daily experience of commuters. Look out for poems in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil in trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle Lines, as well as videos created by local artists and featuring local poets in stations and on trains.
