பட்டாம்பூச்சி
ஹரிணி V.

எங்கும் பறக்கும்
பட்டாம்பூச்சி தோட்டத்தில்
கம்பளிப்பூச்சியாய் நகர்ந்துகொண்டிருந்தேன்

உறக்கம் பாராமல்
இந்த தோட்டத்தில்
பயணம் செய்யும் நான்
எங்கோ இலைகளுக்கு நடுவிலும்
கிளைகளுக்கிடையிலும்
மறைந்து தான் போகிறேன்
பட்டாம்பூச்சிகளே

பட்டாம்பூச்சிகளே
உங்களை போல் நானும் எப்போது
பறந்து உலகத்தை பார்ப்பது
கம்பளிப்புழு நான்
என் சருமம் ஒன்றும்
பட்டுப் போர்வைபோல்
மென்மையாக இல்லை

கம்பளிப்பூச்சி நான்
என்
பச்சை சாயலை தவிர்த்து
வேறு வண்ணங்கள் கண்டதில்லை
இந்த கம்பளிப்பூச்சியும்
ஒரு நாள்
பட்டாம்பூச்சியாய் உருவெடுக்கும்
கூடிய விரைவில்

In a garden of
flitting butterflies
I crawl along, a mere caterpillar.

Oh butterflies
In this garden
I journey along
Sleepless, hiding
Among the leaves and branches.

Oh butterflies!
Like you
when will I take flight
And see the world?
But now I’m just a caterpillar
Cloaked in green
In a skin that’s
Hardly as soft as silk.

Just a caterpillar
Seen no other colour
Just this green
But this caterpillar too
Will one day become
Like you, a butterfly

Soon, very soon.

— The poem was first performed by Harini V at the event organized by the Arts House called "Sollum Swaramum" which combined poetry with light music.

Harini V is a Singapore-based bilingual poet writing in Tamil and English. Her work has appeared in Nithimisai Nagarum Koorangazhkal (SG50 Women’s Anthology) and Love at the Gallery 2017 (National Gallery Singapore). She co-led the National Library Board’s Young Writers Circle for Tamil writers, nurturing emerging voices, and helped launch the Tamil edition of SingPoWriMo in 2018. Highlights include representing her college at CUPSI 2017 in Chicago and receiving Mediacorp Tamil Seithi’s Young Role Model Award. Her poems feature in digital and video projects such as Window (சாளரம்) and My First Dream. Beyond poetry, Harini works in mediation and diplomacy.

Poems on the MRT is an initiative by the National Arts Council, in partnership with SMRT and Stellar Ace. Produced by Sing Lit Station, a local literary non-profit organisation, this collaboration displays excerpts of Singapore poetry throughout SMRT’s train network, integrating local literature into the daily experience of commuters. Look out for poems in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil in trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle Lines, as well as videos created by local artists and featuring local poets in stations and on trains.
