பட்டாம்பூச்சி
ஹரிணி V.

எங்கும் பறக்கும்
பட்டாம்பூச்சி தோட்டத்தில்
கம்பளிப்பூச்சியாய் நகர்ந்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன்

உறக்கம் பாறாமல்
இந்த தோட்டத்தில்
பயணம் செய்யும் நான்
எங்கோ இலைகளுக்க நடுவிலும்
கிளைகளுக்கிடையும்
மறைந்து தான் போகிறேன்
பட்டம்பூச்சிகளே

பட்டம்பூச்சிகளே
உங்களை போல் நானும் எப்போது
பறந்து உலகத்தை பார்ப்பது
கம்பளிப்புழு நான்
என் சருமம் ஒன்றும்
பட்டுப் போர்வைபோல்
மென்மையாக இல்லை

கம்பளிப்பூச்சி நான்
என்
பச்சை சாயலை தவிர்த்து
வேறு வண்ணங்கள் கண்டதில்லை
இந்த கம்பளி பூச்சியும்
ஒரு நாள்
பட்டாம்பூச்சியாய் உருவெடுக்கும்
கூடிய விரைவில்


Butterfly

In a garden of
flitting butterflies
I crawl along, a mere caterpillar.

Oh butterflies
In this garden
I journey along
Sleepless, hiding
Among the leaves and branches.

Oh butterflies!
Like you
when will I take flight
And see the world?
But now I’m just a caterpillar
Cloaked in green
In a skin that’s
Hardly as soft as silk.

Just a caterpillar
Seen no other colour
Just this green
But this caterpillar too
Will one day become
Like you, a butterfly

Soon, very soon.

Harini V is a Singapore-based bilingual poet (Tamil & English). Her work appears in the SG50 women’s anthology Nithimisai Nagarum Koorangazhkal and in Love at the Gallery 2017 (National Gallery Singapore), and she has organised open-mic nights and literary panels. She helped lead the National Library Board’s Young Writers Circle for Tamil writers in its early days, supporting emerging voices in the community. Her literary highlights include representing her college at CUPSI 2017 (Chicago), kick-starting the Tamil edition of SingPoWriMo in 2018, and receiving Mediacorp Tamil Seithi’s Young Role Model Award. Her poems have also featured in digital and video projects such as Window (சாளரம்) and My First Dream. Beyond poetry, Harini works in the mediation and diplomacy space.

Poems on the MRT is an initiative by the National Arts Council, in partnership with SMRT and Stellar Ace. Produced by Sing Lit Station, a local literary non-profit organisation, this collaboration displays excerpts of Singapore poetry throughout SMRT’s train network, integrating local literature into the daily experience of commuters. Look out for poems in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil in trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle Lines, as well as videos created by local artists and featuring local poets in stations and on trains.
