LECTURE: SUPERNATURE: A Mystical Bestiary of Southeast Asia

  • 195 Pearl's Hill Terrace 195 Pearl's Hill Terrace Singapore, 168976 Singapore (map)

You might be familiar with local monsters, such as pontianaks, toyols and hungry ghosts. What you might not realise is that they’re actually part of a broader Southeast Asian ecosystem of mythical creatures—including nagas, manananggals and bo bo gyi—many of them embodiments of nature and of traditional conceptions of the universe.

In this interactive lecture, you’ll be guided through the different biomes of the Southeast Asian spirit world, from the lower world of the seas and subterranean depths, to the middle world of forests and cities, to the upper world of the mountains and skies. You’ll learn about how our region’s been influenced by global cultures—Indian, Chinese, and Islamic—creating a truly cosmopolitan cosmology; a view of the Earth full of unearthly magic.

Talk conducted by Ng Yi-Sheng, a Singaporean writer, researcher and queer activist with an interest in Southeast Asian histories, myth & lit.
