PUBLIC LECTURE: The Comfortable Chaos of Singaporean Chinese Names

  • Central Public Library 100 Victoria St, #B1-01 National Library / Lee Kong Chian Reference Library Singapore 188064 Singapore (map)

On 8 June, Don Shiau will deliver a public lecture based on research I've done for my manuscript as part of the NAC-NLB Writers' Lab. The lecture will be about how rabak Singaporean Chinese names actually are. Despite the title, it's for all ethnicities, and everyone will be invited to share perspectives during a dialogue after the lecture.

The story of Singapore's Chinese names isn’t a Chinese story, but a very Singaporean one, involving government policies, policy u-turns, perplexed teachers, irate parents, geopolitics, and even a secret memo from Lee Kuan Yew.

📍Venue: Programme Room 1, Central Public Library
