Dr. Vimlesh Kanti Verma, an influential Hindi linguist and scholar, began his life in translation in Bulgaria and Indian diaspora communities. From promoting and advocating for the recognition of the natural variations that occur in the development of Hindi to creating the first Bulgarian-Hindi Dictionary in 1978, Dr. Verma’s work questions what we understand as a “language”, be it spoken or written.
In multilingual Singapore, where our own lexicon is made up of a myriad languages and dialects, and everyday conversations are seamless acts of translation, Dr. Verma’s unique experience at the intersection of translation and linguistics will surely prove insightful to our daily interactions with the world and the way we communicate.
