In response to their work “Mother & Son”, Norah Lea and Vimal Kumar invite Arin Alycia Fong, an emerging Singaporean writer who has recently performed at the Singapore Writers Festival. She is a graduate student of Creative Writing at Nanyang Technological University and her short fiction has appeared in an anti-realist fiction anthology this is how you walk on the moon and has been longlisted for the First Pages Prize 2018 organised by Stockholm Writers’ Festival. Her poetry can also be found on Quarterly Literary Review Singapore.

For Virgin Conceptions: Engendering The Immaculate Through Art and Text, Arin will be reading “Madonna of the Pomegranate”, her short story about Mia Pereira, a fictional character who is miraculously pregnant and finds herself navigating digital, national and religious spaces amidst comparisons to the Virgin Mary. This reading will be followed by an artists’ panel discussion of the gendering of immaculate icons within the different practices of art, writing and the intersecting cultural backgrounds of Norah, Vimal and Arin.
