PANEL: Translating the Classic

  • National Gallery Singapore 1 Saint Andrew's Road Singapore, 178957 Singapore (map)

Ethos Books presents Translating the Classic: A Translators’ Discussion on Retelling Great Stories, as part of TranslateSingapore organised by The Select Centre and hosted by the National Gallery Singapore.

Open to the public, this discussion presents Noelle de Jesus and Manuelita Contreras-Cabrera, two award-winning writers who have been bitten by the translation bug. This discussion is based on their experience of translating In the Clutches of Daylight (Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag) by Edgardo Reyes and Northern Lights (Ilaw sa Hilaga) by Lazaro Francisco — classic novels by two Philippine masters.

Noelle and Manuelita will surface the concerns and tensions they faced when translating canonical texts.

This discussion is a carrying over of a translation conversation held in Manila earlier this month organised by The Ateneo de Manila University Press on 14 September at Ateneo de Manila University, and in cooperation with their Departments of English and Filipino, and Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL).
