READING: "We Speak of Flowers", Eileen Chong

  • National Library Board 100 Victoria Street Singapore, 188064 Singapore (map)

What stories do our ancestors leave behind in the objects they touched, the food they cooked, the words they never said? How do we piece together fragments of family history across generations and borders?

Explore these tender questions of grief and healing with poet Eileen Chong as she reads from her latest poetry collection, We Speak of Flowers.

Eileen Chong is an Australian poet who was born and raised in Singapore. She is the author of 11 books published in Australia and the United States, including six full collections of poetry. Her work has shortlisted for many prizes in Australia, including the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, twice for the New South Wales’ Premier’s Literary Award, and twice for the Prime Minister’s Literary Award. Her first book, Burning Rice, was the first poetry collection by an Asian Australian writer to be studied as part of the New South Wales’ Higher School Certificate English syllabus. Her most recent collection is We Speak of Flowers (University of Queensland Press, 2025). She lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
