JAM SESSION: "Expanding the Idea of Print" with Genevieve Chua, Temporary Press & TypsettingSG

  • Sing Lit Station 22 Dickson Road, #02-01 Singapore, , 209506 Singapore (map)

What is this technology called print, and what relationship does writing have with printing in the age of the smartphone? Print can be so much more than just a means of materialising a writer's words. What do we discover if we approach printing as heritage, as research, and as art? What is the future of print? Let's feel our way towards some answers with our speakers, who will be discussing and also demonstrating their work.

This event will be facilitated by 2024 Jalan Besar Fellow Tse Hao Guang. Limited spaces availalble! Attendees can expect to be led through some hands-on exercises.

ABOUT GENEVIEVE CHUA: Genevieve Chua (born 1984, Singapore) is a painter who works primarily through abstraction. Chua employs a method of working that unfurls and reveals the painter's process through diagram, palimpsest, syntax, and the glitch. While notions of nature and wilderness persist across several works, the form taken by her exhibitions – image, text or object – is disrupted through painting.

ABOUT TEMPORARY PRESS: Temporary Press is a small-scale independent publisher producing content between art and design. Based in Singapore, it is run by gideon-jamie, a design studio involved in writing, publishing, and graphic design.

ABOUT TYPESETTINGSG: TypesettingSG is a traditional letterpress studio founded in early 2014 as an educational platform to teach and promote traditional letterpress printing, focusing mainly on the use of movable types. The studio also initiated projects to preserve and document Singapore's past printing heritage.
