NSFW: Queer Writing After 377a

  • Sing Lit Station 22 Dickson Road, #02-01 Singapore, , 209506 Singapore (map)

Since the 1970s, Singapore's been home to a vibrant tradition of queer writing, with authors often waging war against institutional homophobia and transphobia. But times are changing, with the forthcoming repeal of our colonial sodomy law, Section 377A—and the corresponding backlash against progress. How should today’s writers respond to these shifting trends?

Join NSFW (Not the Singapore Festival for Writers) for a panel discussion at Sing Lit Station, featuring Stephanie Dogfoot, Paul M. Jerusalem and Carissa Cheow, moderated by NSFW organiser Ng Yi-Sheng, and held amidst the revelry of an unofficial SWF afterparty.

Stephanie Dogfoot (they/she) authored the poetry collection Roadkill for Beginners (Math Paper Press 2019), which they adapted into a short film called An Intermediate Guide to Roadkill with filmmaker Nina Chabra in 2021. She runs a monthly poetry event called Spoke & Bird and co-edited EXHALE: an Anthology of Queer Singapore Voices (Math Paper Press 2021).

Paul M. Jerusalem (he/him) is a second-generation Filipino writer, creative, and researcher. Born in Singapore, his writing dwells on what it means to be in the spaces between. He is interested in issues of race, diaspora, transnational identity, gender, and sexuality. His writing has been published by Vagabond Press, Math Paper Press, and Ethos Books, and can be found in EXHALE: An Anthology of Queer Singapore Voices, Quarterly Literature Review Singapore, Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, and Rice Media, among others.

Carissa Cheow (she/her) is a community organizer and political theorist by circumstantial necessity. A recent Master in Public Policy graduate, her current works-in-progress include her debut poetry collection titled you need a very small space to read these poems, and another collection of essays titled Storms Are Not The Only Futures.
