Poetry and The Dailiness of Life: a masterclass with John Burnside

Poetry and The Dailiness of Life: a masterclass with John Burnside

proudly presents

Poetry and the Dailiness of Life: a masterclass

The aim of this session is to use some existing examples of work by Randall Jarrell, T.S. Eliot, Mark Doty and some of the contemporary Cave Canem poets to show how poetry works to re-value and renew quotidian experience – what Randall Jarrell calls The Dailiness of Life.

John Burnside will specifically look at how forms can be used to create music, while at the same time suggesting spontaneity and the importance of improvisation as the basis for the contemporary poem.

This session will be suitable for those who have some reading and practice on hand, though beginnings would also fit in well. Participants are to bring their own personal writing materials.

Price: $50 per participant
Date: 29 September 2018 (Saturday)
Time: 1pm–4pm
Venue: Sing Lit Station (22 Dickson Road, #02-01, Singapore 209506)

John Burnside’s novels include The Devil’s Footprints (2007), Glister (2008) and A Summer of Drowning (2011). He is also the author of two short story collections, three memoirs and several prizewinning poetry collections, including Black Cat Bone, winner of both the Forward and the T.S. Eliot Prizes in 2012. His most recent novel, Ashland & Vine, was published alongside a new collection of poetry, Still Life with Feeding Snake, in February 2017.
