a fiction workshop with Danielle West

Our narratives define us. They get us hired for a job, close a sale, pick us up from the canvas after a knockout and help us move on from trauma. Sometimes we feel burdened or even embarrassed by our stories, not realising they are ultimately ours alone to craft.

This session is for anyone who has ever wanted to explain an experience they have had to a friend, convince a customer to buy an item, urge a loved one to make the right decision, write their first or fifth book or short story. Students will explore narrative and storytelling to understand the importance of stories in society and the workplace. Students will review and discuss excerpts from stories and poems while learning to write their own narratives and short stories. We will examine the following:

  • The purpose of stories and the effects on others

  • What makes a good story

  • Collecting and curating ideas

  • The function of poetry in prose

  • Crafting characters

  • Setting a scene

  • Conflict for mobility and growth

  • The do's and don'ts of dialogue

  • The kindest cuts; how to edit

The event begins at 7pm; door opens at 6.30pm. Participants will get to choose between paying for a workshop only ticket, or a ticket that entitles them to both the workshop and a copy of Danielle West’s latest novel, Girls Can’t Be in the Mafia, at an extra $15 (RRP $25). Book sales of the novel will also be made available throughout the entirety of the workshop. Do note that the same workshop will be happening twice over 2 separate nights.
