ABOUT

Deborah Emmanuel is a Singaporean poet, multidisciplinary artist and professional speaker. Her work has been invited to things like the Barcelona International Poetry Festival, Q Berlin Questions, TEDx Singapore and has even toured with Sarah Kay. Deborah has written 3 books; When I Giggle In My Sleep (2015), Rebel Rites (2016)and Genesis Visual Poetry Collection (2018). When not writing or performing poetry, she also makes music with Mantravine and Kiat, creates movement pieces, teaches workshops, paints/illustrates and devises independent theatre.

WORKSHOPS BY DEBORAH EMMANUEL

SOCIAL ISSUES IN DUB POETRY
For: upper sec., junior college; 8-20 pax
Availability: 2.5 hours per session; single session
Description: Explore the complex matters of social injustice and politics in this fun workshop. Using spoken word against dub music – a genre emerging out of reggae in the 1970s – students will write and perform their own dub poetry.
Learning Outcomes: understand how to explore sociopolitical questions using poetry; practice public speaking skills and encourage self-confidence; exercise the use of poetic devices.
Eligible for Tote Board Arts Grant Subsidy

NARRATIVE IN MOVEMENT
For: upper sec., junior college; 5-20 pax
Availability: 2.5 hours per session; single session
Description: Begin with a story and turn it into different layers of abstraction in this multi-disciplinary workshop. Movement poetry is a combination of prose, poetry and physical theatre techniques; students will have a chance to devise choreography, pair it with a narrative, and workshop their pieces for future performances.
Learning Outcomes: understand how to express one story in different forms; exercise creative writing skills; explore movement as a storytelling tool.

CONFESSING IN SPOKEN WORD
For: all students; 8-20 pax
Availability: 2.5 hours per session; single session
Description: Attain a better understanding of confessional poetry and connect with your inner self in this workshop. Where are the universal themes in your own experiences? How might we find release when we choose to articulate something? These are the questions students will ask in this rewarding and intimate workshop.
Learning Outcomes: understand how to practice self-awareness and encourage self-confidence; gain a better understanding of specific material can relate to universal themes; exercise the use of poetic devices.
